- During a futuristic ice age when Earth and her cities lie beneath layers of ice after a nuclear war, Konrad is given command of an ice vessel after encountering a dying man. His command is short-lived for the ice-age is ending, and his idol, the Ice Mother, has fallen. As he sails north toward New York. Konrad sees the quest almost as a pilgrimage to the Ice Mother while some of the other passengers see the voyage as a manifestation of the changing world.
