- Anville, Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d', 1697-1782
- Abstract:
- D'Anville's map, published by Venetian François Santini, is a particularly important map of the United States, Mexico, and the Gulf of Mexico. While the detail within Mexico is dense, it does not identify who owns the land north of the Río Grande, here labeled Rio del Norte. Notably, the land of the indigenous Tecas people is identified, even though the map labels a large area as unknown country. The map notates La Salle's explorations in Texas in 1685 and French discoveries near Galveston in 1720. The Sabine River is here misnamed as the Rio de Adayes. The elegant cartouche features a waterfall, alligator, climbing animals, natives, and other rich detail. Interestingly, there are four scales at bottom center: Milles d'Italie, Lieues Communes de France, Lieues Marines Françoises et Angloises, and Lieues Espagnoles.
