Report on the United States and Mexican boundary survey ; made under the direction of the secretary of the Interior
- Title:
- Report on the United States and Mexican boundary survey ; made under the direction of the secretary of the Interior
- Creator:
- United States. Department of the Interior
- Abstract:
- Emory’s incredibly thorough report on government explorations in the Southwest includes, along with extensive text, illustrations of biological and geological discoveries, anthropological studies of the Mexican and Native American populations, and landscape illustrations showing views across the border from diverse locations and varying perspectives. The accounts were important in noting that the deserts of the southwest were not an agrarian paradise. Emory's own contribution to the Report is cartographic; as the Commission's chief astronomer, he had made most of the several thousand observations that were incorporated into the maps, which helped to settled boundary questions that cleared the way for railroads.
