- Roessler, A. R.
- Abstract:
- Roessler’s 1874 map is one of the great representations of Texas. It preserves considerable geological data based on the Texas Geological Survey of the 1850s as conducted by Benjamin Shumard, the chief geologist of Texas, for whom Roessler worked. In scale, detail, and content it surpasses Roemer’s 1849 map. Its depiction of the state’s natural resources and agricultural zones is extensive. For instance, Roesseler used 7 distinct symbols for different types of trees and 22 different symbols to indicate commercially important mineral and geological points of interest. His labeling of resources such as coal, brown coal, and mineral asphalt anticipates the petroleum discoveries that would transform the state. The map’s left inset provides considerable information about the varieties of soils and ground covers as well as indicating what types of crops could be cultivated.
