Texas: the rise, progress, and prospects of the Republic of Texas
- Title:
- Texas: the rise, progress, and prospects of the Republic of Texas
- Creator:
- Kennedy, William, 1799-1871
- Abstract:
- Kennedy's two-volume work on the Republic of Texas did much to encourage English and European settlement in Texas. Four maps, including John Arrowsmith's rare Map of Texas were published with Volume I. The influence of the book was far-reaching and helped Texas gain recognition as an independent state by Great Britain on November 16, 1840. Kennedy served as Texan Consul in London and returned to Texas as British Consul at Galveston. The well-known bibliographer of Texas John Jenkins wrote, βthe large map by John Arrowsmith ranks with those of Tanner and Emery as the best maps of Texas during the period of the Republic. It is a monument to Texas cartography, but apparently was included in only a portion of the copies of the original edition, as only a small percentage of surviving copies contain it.β Gift of Amy B. β84 and Tim A.
