- Creator:

- Abstract:
- Derived from De L'Isle's landmark 1703 map of Mexico and Florida, this decorative map incorporates information from French explorers like La Salle, Bienville, and d'Iberville. In addition to the Great Lakes, the mouth of the Mississippi, and villages in the lower Mississippi Valley and Texas, where the Spanish were erecting presidios and associated missions, the English settlements on the Atlantic coast are accurately portrayed for the first time. This map includes rich pictorial imagery of Spanish activity in the West Indies and New Mexico. It shows tracks of the Spanish galleons and routes to Havana, alluding to the annual trade fleets. Another image portrays a naval battle, possibly a lone British or French ship attacking the Spanish galleons. Europeans carry chests of precious metals—a metaphor for the riches of America—while the indigenous inhabitants, identified with feathered headdresses, observe European avarice.
