No. 5549, 177 136/1000 acres
- Abstract:
- The Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company, the first of its type in the United States, was founded in New York in 1830s by empresarios Joseph Vehlein, David G. Burnet, and Lorenzo de Zavala, who had received grants for land east of the San Jacinto River and north of Nacogdoches from the Mexican government. The company owned no land, but rather sold scrip, which was a permit to settle. To obtain title to the land, the settlers would have to meet the requirements of Mexican colonization law. This scrip No. 5549 was in the name of Anthony Dey, one of the company’s officials. Scrips were offered in two options, for either one labor (just over 177 acres) or one sitio (about 4428 acres); this document is an example of the former. However, just before the company began issuing scrip, the Mexican government had forbidden any further immigration to Texas from the United States. The inset map shows the Vehlein-Burnet-de Zavala empresario grants, located immediately to the east of Austin’s Colony between the San Jacinto and Sabine Rivers.
