- Title:
- Colton's atlas of America: illustrating the physical and political geography of North and South America and the West India islands
- Creator:
- Colton, G. Woolworth, (George Woolworth), 1827-1901
- Abstract:
- Colton’s 1856 map shows the borders of Texas as we recognize them today. Within the borders, we see the ongoing development of the county system, which starts on the more populated eastern side of Texas but ends abruptly where modern day I-35 divides the state. Counties in western Texas were not established until the 1860s, with some as recently as Culberson County in 1911 and Hudspeth County in 1917.
