Atlas moderne: ou, collection de cartes sur toutes les parties du globe terrestre
- Title:
- Atlas moderne: ou, collection de cartes sur toutes les parties du globe terrestre
- Abstract:
- Within the Atlas Moderne, the “Carte Du Mexique Et De La Nouvelle Espagne” covers North America, with the Spanish possessions as the focus. This map conveys a wealth of information about the well-populated areas within New Spain. By contrast, there is a vast area north of the Río Bravo or Rivera du Nord (Río Grande) with few locations or details identified other than colonial outposts like Santa Fé, missions, presidios, and indigenous groups who traded with the French in Louisiana. Given the 1771 date of the map, there are some oddities like the omission of San Antonio (founded in 1718) and the attempt to portray the Everglades at the tip of Florida.
