- Abstract:
- Published in 1810, this narrative describes Pike’s two explorations of the recently acquired Louisiana territory, in 1805 and 1806-7; he was also assigned to determine the extent of Spanish control in this contested, though sparsely populated, area. On Pike's second expedition, 1806-1807, he was assigned to explore the headwaters of the Arkansas River, then proceed south and descend the Red River from its source. When the Spanish took Pike and his men into custody, Pike was able to observe many areas in New Mexico, Chihuahua, and Texas. His Account created interest in the Southwest and stimulated a colonizing impulse for Texas. The maps were the first to exhibit a geographic knowledge of the Southwest based on first-hand exploration and are considered milestones in the mapping of the American West. Pike provides many descriptions of Texas as a whole, and his accounts of the colonial government revealed New Spain's difficulty maintaining control of the sparsely settled northern provinces bordering the Louisiana Territory.
