- These reports provide important documentation of the 1849-50 expedition headed by Captain R. B. Marcy, which opened travel and trade routes to West Texas and New Mexico from Ft. Smith, Arkansas and encouraged settlement. In addition to containing Marcy's report on the route from Ft. Smith to Santa Fe, it includes plates of Native Americans, maps, and geologic and topographic features.
