Map of the United States and their territories between the Mississippi and the Pacific Ocean and part of Mexico
- Title:
- Map of the United States and their territories between the Mississippi and the Pacific Ocean and part of Mexico
- Creator:
- Jekyll, Thomas
- Abstract:
- A cornerstone piece for the cartography of the United States, this map is the culmination of decades of surveys and explorations done under the auspices of the federal government. While large sections are marked as “unexplored territory,” Emory assembled the information from earlier efforts, especially from the years since the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, together with the information gathered during his surveys, into an accurate cartographic depiction of the trans-Mississippi west. Many early roads and forts are shown, especially in the western parts of Texas and along the Missouri and its tributaries. This map shows large, transitional territories of Nebraska, Kansas, New Mexico, Utah, Oregon, Washington, and Minnesota. It shows the U.S.-Mexico boundary with both the pre- and post-Gadsden demarcations.
