A new map of Texas, Oregon, and California with the regions adjoining
- Title:
- A new map of Texas, Oregon, and California with the regions adjoining
- Creator:
- Mitchell, S. Augustus (Samuel Augustus), 1792-1868
- Abstract:
- This landmark 1846 map shows the United States’ expanding frontier: the northern and southern paths of “Fremont’s route” through “Indian Territory”; a caravan route from Missouri to Santa Fe; and the Great Spanish Trail from California to Sana Fe. Texas, now part of the United States and occupying its greatest area, appears in a “stove pipe” shape, with its claims extending past the upper reaches of the Río Grande. These claims were dropped as part of the Compromise of 1850 in return for federal assumption of Texas’s public debt. The map also shows early counties across Texas.
