Abstract:

This Republic era document with the Seal of the Republic of Texas certifies a land sale between John Houlihan and Allen Hillway, and contains the signatures of Houlihan, Hillway, and Nathaniel Townsend, the Consul at New Orleans for the Republic of Texas appointed by Sam Houston. Houlihan was an agent of the McMullen-McGloin colony and the Republic while also being one of the original land grantees in the McMullen-McGloin colony of San Patricio de Hibernia. John McMullen and James McGloin founded their colony in 1828 after an empresario contract originally granted to John G. Purnell and Benjamin D. Lovell was relinquished. The contract called for settling 200 families on the left bank of the Nueces River above the coastal reserve. In October 1831 the colonists laid out a town on the east bank of the Nueces, which they called San Patricio de Hibernia, or St. Patrick of Ireland, for the patron saint of their homeland.
