A new map of Mexico and adjacent provinces
- Title:
- A new map of Mexico and adjacent provinces
- Creator:
- Arrowsmith, Aaron, 1750-1823
- Abstract:
- This map covers the Southwestern United States from the Mississippi River to southern California. It was the first large scale map to convey the findings of Zebulon Pike and Alexander von Humboldt. Though Humboldt accused Arrowsmith, with some basis, of plagiarism. Arrowsmith’s map greatly improved on Humboldt’s work, especially in the depiction of Texas and the areas of the Brazos and Guadalupe Rivers. The map depicts the Texas-Louisiana boundary along the Mermeto (Mermentau) River, respecting the formal Spanish position as reported by Humboldt. The Mermentau is about one hundred miles east of the mouth of the Sabine, or well into Louisiana. Later, a second state of the map was issued showing an altered border shifted further west and north, running along the Sabine and Red Rivers, as accepted by both the United States and Spain in the Adam-Onís Treaty of 1819. The insets are Valley of Mexico, Vera Cruz, and Acapulco.
